Katsushika Hokusai

Master of Form and Movement

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was one of the most influential artists in the history of Japanese art and a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition.

Working during Japan’s Edo period, Hokusai produced an extraordinary body of work that ranged from landscapes and nature studies to illustrated books and dramatic scenes of everyday life. His prints are celebrated for their bold compositions, dynamic movement, and striking use of line.

Today, Hokusai’s work remains among the most recognisable and widely admired examples of Japanese woodblock prints, influencing artists across the world for generations.

The Art of Ukiyo-e Printmaking

Like many artists of his time, Hokusai worked within the collaborative tradition of ukiyo-e printmaking.

An artist would first create the design, which was then carved into wooden blocks by skilled craftsmen. Ink was applied to the blocks and printed onto paper layer by layer to build the finished image.

This process allowed for remarkable precision and subtle colour effects, resulting in prints that combine artistic vision with exceptional craftsmanship.

Landscapes, Nature, and Iconic Imagery

Hokusai is perhaps best known for his powerful landscapes and nature-inspired compositions.

His most famous series, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, includes some of the most iconic images in Japanese art history. These works explore the changing moods of the landscape, capturing Mount Fuji through shifting seasons, weather, and perspectives.

Hokusai’s prints often combine dramatic movement with careful balance, whether depicting waves, wind, distant mountains, or travellers moving through the landscape.

His work later had a profound influence on many Western artists and designers during the nineteenth century, particularly during the period known as Japonisme, when Japanese prints became widely admired across Europe.
