Japanese Woodblock Prints
A Timeless Tradition of Japanese Art
Japanese woodblock prints represent one of the most celebrated traditions within Japanese art, combining artistic vision with remarkable craftsmanship.
First flourishing during Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868), woodblock prints became widely admired for their elegant compositions, subtle colour transitions, and ability to capture fleeting moments of daily life and nature.
Artists working in this tradition produced images of landscapes, travel scenes, seasonal changes, theatre, and city life, creating artworks that were both visually striking and deeply connected to the rhythms of Japanese culture.
Today these prints remain among the most recognisable and influential artworks in the history of global printmaking.
The Art of Woodblock Printing
Traditional Japanese woodblock prints were created through a collaborative process involving several skilled craftsmen.
An artist would design the original image, which was then transferred onto wooden blocks by a specialist carver. Separate blocks were carved for each colour within the design.
Ink was applied to the blocks and carefully pressed onto paper layer by layer to build the finished image.
This meticulous process allowed artists to achieve delicate colour gradations, refined linework, and balanced compositions that remain distinctive to Japanese printmaking.
Ukiyo-e and the “Floating World”
Many of the most famous Japanese woodblock prints belong to the artistic tradition known as ukiyo-e, often translated as “pictures of the floating world.”
Ukiyo-e artists captured scenes of everyday life, travel routes, landscapes, and seasonal changes, reflecting both the beauty and transience of the world around them.
These works were widely collected and enjoyed during the Edo period and later gained international recognition when Japanese prints began influencing Western artists in the nineteenth century.
The bold compositions and innovative perspectives of ukiyo-e prints would go on to inspire painters and designers across Europe and beyond.
Masters of the Tradition
Yama Studio’s launch collection focuses on two of the most celebrated artists of the Japanese woodblock tradition:
• Utagawa Hiroshige — renowned for his atmospheric landscapes and poetic depictions of travel and weather
• Katsushika Hokusai — one of the most influential artists in Japanese art history, known for his bold compositions and iconic imagery
Together their work represents some of the finest achievements of the ukiyo-e tradition and continues to inspire artists around the world.
